How to become a CPL instructor in Michigan
If you want to teach CPL classes in Michigan, instructor certification through a national training organization is the path, and the USCCA is the one we teach. The US Concealed Carry Association certifies instructors to teach its Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals curriculum, the coursework behind concealed carry classes in Michigan and across the country. This class takes you from student to certified instructor in one weekend: curriculum, adult teaching methods, running a live range, and the exam and shooting qualification, all at one location in Taylor.
It is taught by the same team that runs Michigan CPL classes every week across the state through US Gun Classes, so what you learn is how classes actually get taught and filled, not just theory.
Michigan law: who can teach the CPL class
Michigan’s CPL training rules are in MCL 28.425j. The pistol safety course has to be certified by the state or by a national or state firearms training organization, and the instructor has to be certified by the state or by a state or national firearms training organization to teach it. The county clerk cannot require any other instructor certification or make an instructor register with the county.
The course must run at least 8 hours, including 5 hours of instruction on safe storage and handling, ammunition and shooting fundamentals, shooting positions, firearms and the law, avoiding and controlling a violent confrontation, and Michigan’s concealed carry laws, plus at least 3 hours on a firing range with at least 30 rounds fired. The firearms and the law portion must be taught by an attorney or someone trained in the use of deadly force. Each student who completes the course gets a certificate signed by the instructor that states “This course complies with section 5j of 1927 PA 372.” and lists the instructor’s name and phone number, the certifying organization, and the instructor’s certification number and expiration date.

Register with the USCCA, then train
Official registration happens on the USCCA website; that is what activates your e-learning before class. Then two full days of classroom and range work, the exam and the shooting qualification, and you leave certified.
Taught by Will Luker
Will Luker founded US Gun Classes and is a USCCA Training Counselor, the certification that allows him to train and certify new USCCA instructors. He has been certified with the USCCA since December 2015, was one of the first 53 USCCA Training Counselors in the country, and has certified more than 100 instructors. Several of his former students now teach firearms full time. He has also served as a reserve deputy assigned to an internet crime unit.

Do I need teaching experience to become a USCCA instructor?
No. The class is built for experienced shooters who want to start teaching. You practice presenting during the weekend and leave with a complete curriculum to teach from.
