Online CPL Classes in Michigan
Renew your Michigan CPL from home in a live class on Zoom. If this is your first CPL, Michigan requires range time in person, so the full class is one Saturday in Taylor.
- Virtual CPL renewal: live on Zoom, 9:00am to 12:15pm, $39
- Taught live by an instructor you can ask questions of, not a recorded video
- First CPL: 8 hour class with about 3 hours on the range, $99
- Questions? Call (248) 662-5744
Can you get a Michigan CPL online?
Not completely. Michigan’s training law, MCL 28.425j, requires at least 8 hours of training for a first CPL, including at least 3 hours on a firing range where you fire at least 30 rounds. The range time has to happen in person, so no fully online class can get you a first CPL in Michigan. We wrote up what Michigan allows online and what it does not if you want the details.
Renewal is different. To renew, you certify that you spent at least three hours reviewing your course materials and that you went to the range in the six months before you apply. Our virtual renewal class is those three hours of review, taught live. The range trip you do on your own.
Upcoming virtual CPL renewal classes
The class runs on Zoom. Just before class, go to USGunClasses.com/zoom, which sets up Zoom and joins the class for you. If you cannot make your date, call (248) 662-5744 and we will move you to another date or refund you.
Getting your first CPL
The full CPL class is the US Concealed Carry Association Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals course, which Michigan recognizes for the CPL. It runs eight hours on a Saturday at Recoil Firearms, 22509 Ecorse Rd in Taylor, with roughly three of those hours on the range. The class is $99. A $20 deposit online reserves your seat and the $79 balance is due on the day of class, cash or credit.
You do not need experience or your own gun. Rentals and ammunition are available at the range, and you are coached one on one when you shoot.
What about an online classroom for the first CPL?
We have run the classroom part of the first CPL class live on Zoom before, with the range time booked separately. It is not on the schedule right now. If you want to hear when it is offered again, call (248) 662-5744.
Online CPL class questions
Can I get my Michigan CPL completely online?
No. Michigan requires at least 3 hours on a firing range and at least 30 rounds fired for a first CPL, and that part has to be done in person. Renewal is the part you can do from home.
Does an online class count for my Michigan CPL renewal?
Yes. To renew you certify under penalty of perjury that you spent at least three hours reviewing your course materials and that you went to the range in the six months before you apply. This class is the three hours of review. The range trip you do on your own.
My CPL has already expired. Can I take the virtual renewal?
If it has been expired for more than one year you have to take the full eight hour class again rather than the renewal. If it has been less than a year, the renewal class is the right one.
What do I need for the virtual class?
A device that can run Zoom and an internet connection. The link at USGunClasses.com/zoom downloads and sets everything up for you. If it still gives you trouble we will walk you through it so you do not miss the class.
When do I get my certificate?
We send you a digital certificate after class.
